Dodging and Burning

Dodging and Burning
I think dodging and burning was a good learning experience for me. It was a little scary at first, because I really didn't want to mess up my pictures. However, I got the hang of it after the first couple of tries and ended up with a pretty decent picture. I think I will use this process again because it's a great way to darken some parts of your photo while lightening up others at the same time. For this picture I dodged the vending machine in the back and the left side of the building for 9 seconds and burned the entire picture for 12 seconds. This allowed me enough time to expose it, getting the trees darker and the vending machine and left side of the building lighter. I like how this picture turned out because my other prints were too gray, and this picture was exposed long enough to get some darker areas.

A#3-Depth of Field Photos

Assignment #3: Depth of Field
This is a picture of a pumpkin my older sister carved for Halloween. I took this picture for my short depth of field because I wanted to focus on the pumpkin so you could see the detail and I also liked the texture of the wood. My aperture for this picture was between 2.8 and 4 and my shutter speed was set at 500. I used these settings to allow for enough light to be let in in order to get my light meter centered in the middle and to be able to focus just on the pumpkin and blur out the background.
This is a picture of Jordan Lake in Cary, North Carolina. I took this picture for my long depth of field because I wanted everything to be in focus so you could still get the texture of the wood and trees and water in the background. I used an aperture of 11 for this picture and a shutter speed of 500. I wanted everything in the photo to be focused and clear with my light meter in the middle as well.

A#1 and 2

Assignment #1: Elements and Principles
This is a picture I took on the football field of part of the soccer goal and some sort of uniform. I took this picture for the element of form because there are a lot of different 3-D shapes here. It turned out a little dark, but overall not too bad.
This is a picture of a mop leaning up against a brick wall near the bleachers of the school. I took this picture for texture because the brick wall and mop have very different textures and that's what I wanted to capture. I didn't like how this one turned out a little dark as well and too gray.

Assignment #2: Still Life
This is a picture of some sports objects including a football, shoes, a baseball mit, and part of a lacrosse stick. I took this picture for my still life because the objects all fit together nicely and I liked how it was arranged.
This is a picture of a basket of different flowers with garden gloves and tools on the side. I took this picture for still life because I liked how some of the flowers and the garden gloves were in focus so you could see the texture well.
